The bequest of Tore Schulze

Tore Schulze Memorial School

Tore Schulze Memorial School is situated approximately 1.5km off the Great North Road from Zimba town in the Southern Province of Zambia. The school was constructed with funds
donated from the Tore Schulze Estate. The foundation stone was laid by High Royal Highness
Chief Sipatonyana of the Tonga people of Kalomo on 29th April 2016.
The project was completed and handed over to the community and Ministry of Education on
3rd November 2017. The function was hosted by the Permanent Secretary then in the Ministry
of Education.

The school is comprised of 2 blocks, each block with two classrooms, and in addition, there is a separate administration block which has the headteacher and deputy headteacher’s offices and
a staff room for the teaching staff.
The establishment of this school was crucial, as Zimba in 2015 had only two Government schools
that were significantly overcrowded with over 50 children per classroom per one teacher. This
impacted the quality of education and placed additional strain on teachers. Furthermore, many
children from surrounding villages had to walk long distances, some over 10 kilometers, to attend
classes in Zimba.

The school began operating as a primary school on May 15th, 2017, offering classes from Early Childhood Education (ECE) up to the 3rd grade. Currently, the school has expanded to include
grades from ECE(Pre-School) to the 9th grade. Currently, the total enrollment is 666 pupils,
comprising 318 boys and 348 girls. The school has a dedicated team of 20 teachers (6m, 14f),
including 2 male and one female volunteer teachers.

In 2019, the school became a Grade 7 examination center, and further, in 2023, it was granted Grade 9 examination center status. The school continues to perform well academically and has
been selected as one of the few schools in Zimba District to offer Secondary Education under the
new curriculum, starting from Form 1 to Form 4.
Below is the table showing how the schools has been performing in the National Final
Examinations.

Beyond academics, the school actively participates in co-curricular activities such as debate, sports, and poetry, achieving first position in recent inter-school competitions in
debate and sports. The school also undertakes preventive maintenance and manages a
production unit. Additionally, catch-up and "Let's Read" interventions are part of the
school educational practices.
Despite the school's successes, it has some challenges, mainly the increased enrollment,
which means the school will need additional infrastructure.
