LIFT-Zambia Empowers Zimba Farmers with Climate-Smart Farming Inputs and Solar Pumps. Farmers participating in the LIFT-Zambia Programme in Zimba District have received farming inputs and portable solar-powered water pumps as part of ongoing efforts to promote sustainable, green and climate-smart agricultural practices.
The distribution was conducted by Response Network, which is implementing the LIFT-Zambia Programme in the district. The support is aimed at helping participating farmers improve agricultural production while strengthening their resilience to the growing challenges posed by climate change.

Among the key items distributed were portable solar pumps, providing farmers with a clean and renewable source of energy for irrigation. The pumps are intended to enable farmers to irrigate their fields and gardens more efficiently without depending on fuel-powered pumps, helping reduce operational costs while promoting environmentally friendly farming practices.
For smallholder farmers, access to reliable water remains an important factor in maintaining crop production, particularly during periods of limited rainfall. The introduction of portable solar-powered irrigation technology therefore provides farmers with an opportunity to make better use of available water resources and extend production beyond the rainy season.
The input distribution also included farming inputs intended to support farmers in their agricultural activities and strengthen household food production and livelihoods.
The activity was attended by the Ministry of Agriculture, represented by the Area Extension Officer in Zimba District. The participation of the Ministry provided an opportunity to strengthen collaboration between the programme, government agricultural extension services and farmers.
The Area Extension Officer engaged with farmers during the distribution and emphasised the importance of adopting improved and sustainable agricultural practices. Government extension services remain an important link between farmers and technical knowledge, helping communities translate agricultural innovations into practical solutions at household and field level.
Through LIFT-Zambia, participating farmers are being supported with knowledge and practical skills in areas such as climate-smart agriculture, agroecological practices, water management and livelihood strengthening. The programme seeks to equip farmers with approaches that can help them respond to changing climatic conditions while improving food and nutrition security.
The introduction of solar-powered irrigation technology complements these efforts by providing farmers with a practical renewable-energy solution. Unlike conventional pumps that require fuel, solar pumps use energy from the sun, making them particularly relevant for rural farming communities where access to affordable and reliable energy can be a challenge.
For Response Network, the distribution represents more than the provision of agricultural inputs. It is part of a broader approach to empowering farmers with knowledge, technologies and locally appropriate solutions that can contribute to resilient livelihoods.
